Compassion is what connects us.
Seeing ourselves as special or different is what divides us.
By singling ourselves out as an “empath” with the Instagram definition of “empath” being that we can easily sense the emotions of others is creating division.
The truth is we are ALL empaths.
The question shouldn’t be “are you an empath?” but instead “what KIND of empath are you?”
Don’t get me wrong – we all have unique talents and gifts that come easier to us than others.
Math? Not a strength for me.
Can I do it? Yup. With a lot of work and frustration.
Do I hand over my accounting when I can? Absolutely.
Now what does this have to do with calling ourselves an “empath”?
Learn more about yourself by discovering your three core emotional values
The truth is we are ALL empaths.
We all have the ability to access strengths within us that may come more easily to us than others.
That being said, though, it’s 100% possible for us to LEARN all kinds of empathy.
Right now if you identify as being an emotional empath, there are lots of strategies you can use to strengthen your other kinds of empathy.
Just like how math is a skill we can all learn how to do, all kinds of empathy are learn-able.
So the question really isn’t “Are you an empath?” – it’s “What kind of empathy comes most easily to you?”
There are five different kinds of empaths:
Let’s talk about what each of these kinds of empathy looks like so you can learn which ones you most identify with.
At the end, I will also tell you how you can get the free empath’s survival guide to show you how to bring your kind of empathy back into balance as well as support your growth and development of the other kinds of empath skills that you may want to learn.

Characteristics of a Physical Empath
If you identify as a physical empath, you easily take on the energy of the world around you and feel it in your physical body.
When you walk into a room or places on this earth where there have been incredible tragedies or monumental celebrations – you can feel the lived experience to varying degrees within your physical body.
Where emotional empaths can feel the emotions of people they’re around, physical empaths can feel the emotions of the physical space and the people who have moved through that physical space beforehand.
Emotional empaths need the person experiencing the emotions to be present or to have an emotional connection to that person – physical empaths feel the reverberations of the emotions of people who have been through that space or interacted with the object(s) or physical reality.
Physical empaths can also develop their empathic senses to be able to taste, hear, and smell as well as have the physical experiences mimicked in their own body.
It is common for physical empaths to feel others’ illness, pains, or ailments in their own body – and this is a potential problem if you don’t know how to protect yourself and clear this energy that you’re taking on. You could start to develop the symptoms and physical aspects of a disease without having the contributing factors – for example, have chest pains and symptoms of a heart attack while still having a perfectly healthy heart.

Characteristics of a Mental Empath
Mental empaths know information that they have either learned ages ago or never formally learned in this lifetime.
A big aspect of mental empathy is your ability to access and trust your intuition, because intuition is really just a massive interpretation of all of the subtle information around us, narrowing in on what matters most at that moment.
If you’ve ever been asked a question and immediately know the answer, but have no idea how you know that – you likely have some strong mental empathic skills.
Another aspect of mental empathy is the ability to easily read between the lines of what someone else is saying. You have a strong knowing of when someone is lying or attempting to hide the truth for self-preservation.
Mental empaths are also excellent problem solvers, often seeing the world from an objective view where you can both see the forest, the trees, as well as understand the soil, the weather patterns, the animals and insects as well as the movement of the earth.
This all-encompassing knowing is what makes mental empaths such great problem solvers.
Mental empaths, whether they are aware of it or not, are also very connected to their past-lives which is where a lot of these mental/intuitive hits of information come from.

Characteristics of a Nature Empath
Nature empaths have a heightened connection to nature that goes far beyond the love of being outside.
The flow of the seasons, the changing of weather patterns and the astrological events greatly affect those with strong nature empathy.
They can feel and hear the earth breathe below them which can be both a blessing and a curse. Driving by mines and areas of deforestation can be very painful and difficult as these people feel the mourning of the trees missing their neighbours and the earth grieving it’s injury.
The experiences of animals are keenly felt in one with strong nature empathic abilities, and will make these people great veterinarians or staff of a veterinarian clinic because they will be able to sense what’s wrong with an animal.
Characteristics of a Spiritual Empath
Religious and spiritual leaders that are aligned with their teachings are operating with strong levels of spiritual empathy.
But you don’t have to be a spiritual leader to have strong spiritual empathy!
People with strong spiritual empathy will find it very easy to learn certain modalities like tarot reading, energy work, past-life regression, spiritual meditation.
They are very easily connected with their spirit guides, higher-self and the ascended masters and can easily know what these divine beings want and what they don’t want, for both themselves and others.

Characteristics of an Emotional Empath
Emotional empaths are the most widely known kind of empath which means that this is the kind of empathy people either (a) identify the most with, or (b) want to develop the most because they also want to be “special” and be able to access this incredibly helpful gift.
The greatest strength of someone with emotional empathic skills that they’ve developed is that they are in-tune with the other people and how they are managing in their lives.
Not only do you help comfort others during their emotional challenges, you also get to deeply experience their joy in the exciting and celebrated times of their lives.
The biggest downside to emotional empathy is that this is the most invasive kind that can have profoundly negative impacts on our health and our lives if out of balance.
Emotional empathy is often associated with people who identify as being highly-sensitive, but this is not always the case.
It is absolutely possible for you to be a more analytical and logical person, but still have a high degree of emotional empathy.
